REP. SARA JACOBS REVIEWS 1ST TERM, HER GOALS
Military pay boost, housing and child care are key issues
As she begins her second congressional term in a newly Republican-controlled House of Representatives, Rep. Sara Jacobs aims to foster global peacekeeping, protect digital privacy and enshrine reproductive rights into federal law in the new legislative session.
The San Diego Democrat acknowledged it will be harder now for members of her party to get bills passed. However, she said she has established relationships with Republican colleagues and expects to introduce bipartisan legislation, including bills to address childhood poverty and promote military housing and child care.
“It’s a razor-thin majority, so I think there will still be a lot of opportunities for us to stand up for our values,” she said.
Jacobs discussed her 2022 accomplishments and 2023 goals as part of a series of interviews the San Diego Union-tribune conducted with San Diego-area lawmakers.
She recently was reelected to Congress representing California’s 51st Congressional District, which includes much of the city of San Diego, El Cajon, La Mesa and Lemon Grove. She was first elected to the 53rd District in 2020, before redistricting reshaped her district.
Jacobs, 33, was also elected her party’s caucus leadership representative in December, becoming the youngest member of House Democratic leadership and part of a generational shift within it. She said she plans to use the position, reserved for members who have served five terms or fewer, to air incoming members’ concerns and advance San Diego’s interests.
