Novo Brazil toasts to Imperial Beach expansion

- BY ROXANA BECERRIL Roxana Becerril is a freelance writer.

With its name meaning “new” in Portuguese, the Brazilian-inspired brewery Novo Brazil is celebrating its recent expansion into Imperial Beach, its fourth location in San Diego.

“With our plan of being present in the whole South Bay, (Imperial Beach) was the only piece that was missing,” said founder Tiago Carneiro. “We chose to face the bay because I believe it brings a different experience from other venues in Imperial Beach. It has some of the most incredible views of San Diego.”

Those views capture the Coronado Bridge and downtown skyline. Even better than the setting, Novo offers 64 varieties on tap, including its locallymade

beers and kombuchas (hard and non-alcoholic), two exclusive beers brewed on site (a “juicy” pale ale and a Hefeweizen), and a menu featuring a fusion of Brazilian, Mexican and American dishes.

At 535 Florence Street., the Imperial Beach location is Novo’s biggest one yet, with a dining room measuring 7,500 square feet, seating for 300 people and a 3,000-square-foot patio. The patio also features two 23-foot LED TVS for watching football, soccer and other sports.

The exterior of the venue paints a picture of Copacabana, the Rio de

Janeiro beach, inspired by the late Brazilian artist Roberto Burle Marx.

Since Novo’s Chula Vista flagship opened in 2015, the company has added outlets in Otay Ranch and National City, with a Mission Valley location expected in November.

Carneiro says his vision has always been to bring all of the “good vibes,” flavors and art from Brazil and build something relevant to the community in California.

“We want people to come here and spend time here with us... to enjoy the view, beer, sports and food,” he said. “We’re so well connected to the community ... they’ve been so supportive since we’ve been here.”

We’re halfway through January but it still feels like the holidays when you think about all the great deals coming your way this week.

We are kicking things off with some great happy hour specials for anyone who has a hankering for oysters or truffle fries. There is also quite a steal on solar tubes that you won’t want to miss.

Oh, and you might want to pencil in Taco Tuesday in your calendar this week for some great fish tacos.

Let’s get things cooking!

Get $1.60 fish tacos at Oscar’s Mexican Seafood on Taco Tuesdays

Tacos, in my opinion, are one of San Diego’s staple cuisines. Compact, accessible and packed with flavor, it’s like a sandwich but much, much better. There’s even a whole day dedicated to them: Taco Tuesday.

This Tuesday (and every week), head on over to Oscar’s Mexican Seafood and enjoy fish tacos for only $1.60 at any of their locations, all day.

Delectable and well-prepared, you’re going to wish that every day is a Tuesday. Dine in only.

Enjoy $1.25 oysters, $6 truffle fries at Gaslamp Fish House happy hour

There is no shortage of food deals this week. Gaslamp Fish House is offering $1.25 oysters on the half shell, $6 truffle fries, and more from their happy hour food menu.

Bring a friend, or several friends, and enjoy a wonderful night out after work to dine and unwind.

If oysters aren’t your cup of tea, they have a lot more savory selections to offer. Try their Bacon Wrapped Swordfish Bites ($8) or their Macadamia Nut Crusted Calamari Strips ($11). Personally, I am a fan of their Chilled Shrimp with homemade cocktail sauce ($9).

This deal is available from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
