A New York City luxury dessert shop has arrived in La Jolla’s Westfield UTC: Lady M Confections, where mille crêpes are the star of the show.

“San Diego is just such a beautiful part of .. California,” said Lady M CEO Ken Romaniszyn. “I think it’s a place that’s growing so we’re really excited to be able to establish some roots there.”

Made with 20 layers of paper-thin crepes held together with soft vanilla cream, Lady M’s famous crepe cakes date back to 2001, when Japanese pastry chefs began baking them at Romaniszyn’s wholesale bakery in New York.

It wasn’t until 2004 that Romaniszyn, himself a French Culinary Institute-trained chef, opened his first boutique on Madison Avenue. Since then, the company has expanded to 50 locations worldwide, including Singapore and Hong Kong.

The first San Diego location opened in November, with a boutique at Westfield UTC. Romaniszyn — an Orange County native — said he realized there was a huge demand for the creations after he and his wife personally transported cakes to San Diego from his manufacturing facility in Culver City during the pandemic.

The UTC outpost has crepe cakes with a “subtle sweetness” inspired by both Japanese and French influences,

with flavors ranging from classic to green tea, pistachio and more. The treats start at $66 for a 6-inch cake and $108 for a 9-inch cake. Limited edition collaborations and seasonal desserts are also available.

Made with international flavors like chestnuts from France and chocolate from Belgium, Romaniszyn said he’s happy to share his desserts in San Diego.

“We’ve been very fortunate that we can bring in all of these flavors from all over the world and try to put them together and share them with people here.”
