More MLK events, kicking off Lunar New Year and fun outings for kids
After yesterday’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade, we’re continuing to celebrate the legacy of the late civil rights icon with a family-friendly event Monday in Balboa Park, as well as an MLK Day kids camp at the Helen Woodward Animal Center. The rest of the week holds more fun, family activities including the opening of “Frozen” at the Civic Theatre and a Lunar New Year celebration in San Diego.
Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration
Head to the Worldbeat Cultural Center in Balboa Park from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday for a free, family friendly event celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Live music, dancers, drummers and more will take place alongside keynote speakers and food offerings as well as a performance by reggae singer Pato Banton. Bring food and clothing for donation drives to support Haitain refugees.

Lunar New Year Festival at Jeremy Henwood Park
The Little Saigon Foundation of San Diego is ringing in the new year with its annual Lunar New Year Festival taking place Friday through Sunday, Jan. 22.
The festival features food, cultural performances, dancers, music, arts and crafts and other attractions and is held at at Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park, 4455 Wightman Street.
Great for families of all ages, the annual event includes many ways to honor the Vietnameseamerican experience while enjoying sights, sounds and tastes.
Festival hours are from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22. The festival benefits the local Little Saigon community.

Disney’s ‘Frozen’ at San Diego Civic Theatre
You can’t really let it go until you head to San Diego’s Broadway Theater for the premier of
“Frozen, The Musical,” which is coming to town this week.
Watch Disney magic come to life as Anna and Elsa battle it out with a little help from their friends in this Tony-award winning stage production of the hit animated film.
Frozen runs Jan. 18-29 at the San Diego Civic Theatre, located at 1100 Third Ave, San Diego, CA 92101.

Critter Camp at Helen Woodward Animal Center
If you’re looking for something for the kids to do on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, why not help them make friends with animals? Kids 4 and older can spend Jan. 16 at the MLK Day Critter Camp at the Helen Woodward Animal Center.
The camp includes hands-on interactions, crafts and activities designed to help children discover how they can help to create a more humane world.

Military aviation subject of Wine & Lecture event
The Coronado Historical Association and Coronado Museum are teaming up for the latest installment of their local Wine & Lecture series taking place Thursday, Jan. 19.
This week’s event features Brigadier General R.G. Head as he takes wine drinkers through the history of American attack aviation, from its historic inception to the present, while discussing his most recent book on the subject.
War buffs will be delighted to hear first person accounts of engagement, learn about case studies from both Navy and Air Force experts and glean more information about the evolution and technology used in attack aviation.
