MAN SHOT, KILLED IN GUNFIGHT WITH TWO S.D. POLICE OFFICERS

- LYNDSAY WINKLEY U-T

Two San Diego officers fatally shot a 37-year-old man who opened fire on them during a traffic stop in Barrio Logan late Friday night, sheriff ’s officials said.

Christopher Dearman was in a Dodge Ram truck on Logan Avenue near Cesar E. Chavez Parkway about 11:30 p.m. when officers tried to pull him over for an equipment violation, sheriff ’s homicide Lt. Chris Steffen said.

Dearman briefly sped up for about two blocks before stopping near Chicano Park, Steffen said. When Dearman got out of the pickup, he had a handgun. He and the officers opened fire.

Steffen said Dearman shot at least twice at officers, and one bullet struck the hood of the patrol vehicle near the driver’s side.

Investigators are still determining who fired first.

Dearman and the handgun fell to the ground after the shooting, the lieutenant said. Officers ordered Dearman to move away from the weapon, and when he didn’t, a police dog was sent to pull him away from the firearm.

Officers then assisted him, and paramedics took him to a hospital where he died.

“Enough is enough,” San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said of the shooting.

Nisleit attended the memorial for former San Diego police officer and Riverside County sheriff’s Deputy Darnell Calhoun on Saturday. Calhoun was fatally shot Jan. 13 while responding to a domestic violence call in Riverside County. Nisleit noted that a San Diego officer was shot and saved by his vest last month and that a murder suspect threatened two other officers with a loaded shotgun just days ago.

“This violence and lawlessness has to stop,” the chief said.

The San Diego County Sheriff ’s Department will investigate the incident under a countywide protocol that ensures no law enforcement agency investigates its own police shootings.

Law enforcement officials said there is body-worn camera footage of the incident.
