who are at risk of and should be getting screened for lung cancer.

Sadly, despite the potential lifesaving benefits of screening, it is estimated that nearly 95 percent of Americans who are eligible for lung cancer screening don’t seek this opportunity. As a result, some will be diagnosed at an advanced stage, and at that point the survival rate has already dropped by more than 50 percent, compared to earlystage diagnosis. This lack of awareness is even more concerning in California where only 1 percent of eligible populations get screened.

We need more screening. But first, people need to know that screening does exist. So who is eligible and how is it done?

If you are 50 years or older, and a current or former tobacco smoker, then you are at high risk of lung cancer and could qualify for screening. Screening is done with an annual CT scan of the lungs to identify any spots, or nodules, that are suspicious for cancer. These nodules could be small tumors, which can eventually grow into a larger and aggressive cancer. Ask your primary care doctor if you qualify for screening. If you are hesitant to get screened, talk to a lung

specialist who can provide detailed information to better inform your decisionmaking.

While the thought of getting a diagnostic procedure may be intimidating, the benefits outweigh any discomfort. Having clear lungs on a CT scan brings invaluable peace of mind knowing your lungs are in good condition. And if other findings are noted during screening, this will help you to take action on your lung health, perhaps even be a motivator to quit smoking, which has great benefits for overall health.

I encourage those at risk for lung cancer to take advantage of the opportunity to potentially save their lives or the lives of loved ones. Be prepared by taking the lead on your lung health.
