Ronald James De Fields

December 23, 1936 - November 13, 2022

-

NATIONAL CITY — Ronald James De Fields was born in Martinez, CA on December 23, 1936, to Pauline and George De Fields. He died of sudden heart failure on November 13, 2023, at age 85 in his home in Paradise Village, National City, CA.

Ron graduated as valedictorian of his class at Alhambra High School, where he was on the tennis and swim teams. Because his mother worked full time, Ron learned to cook at an early age. His Thanksgiving turkeys were legendary!

Working his way through the University of California at Berkeley, he graduated in 1958 with a degree in Business Administration. He was a member of Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity and the university men’s glee club.

After graduation, Ron served five years in the U.S. Navy, then moved to San Diego to begin a successful sales career with Sears, Equitable Insurance Co., and May Co., from which he retired in 2002.

Ron loved the beaches, classical music, the symphony, the opera, the theater, and traveling.

But most of all, he loved the pipe organ. Although he did not play, he understood all the ins and outs of the instrument. He was most proud of his work on overseeing the installation of the Centennial Pipe Organ at First Presbyterian Church, and of then chairing the Concert Committee for ten years. Having served as president of the Spreckels Organ Society for six years, Ron was still a trustee of the organization and involved in fundraising for the International Summer Organ Festival.

Faith was an important part of Ron’s life. He met his wife, Ann, in the choir at First Presbyterian Church. He continued to sing in choirs at Faith Presbyterian and First United Methodist, where he also trained an acolyte corps of 40 young people.

Ron is survived by his wife, Ann and his sons, Steven (Sandra) of Los Angeles, and Derek (Rose) of Black Diamond, WA. His parents and brother, David, preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Spreckels Organ Society,1549 El Prado, Unit 10,San Diego, CA 92101

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on February 18 at First United Methodist Church in Mission Valley.
