Sheriff’s officials late Friday released the name of the 76-year-old gunman suspected of opening fire at a Fallbrook plant nursery, killing one person and injuring two others.

Enrique Barajas Gutierrez was taken into custody at the Atkins Nursery on Reche Road near Gird Road around 3:15 p.m. — not long after the shooting was reported, officials said.

He was taken to the Fallbrook sheriff ’s substation without incident and was booked into jail early Saturday on suspicion of murder and assault with a firearm.

One of the injured was the suspect’s daughter, sheriff’s Lt. Chris Steffen said. Investigators believe the weapon used in the shooting was a rifle.

The incident was first reported about 2:45 p.m. in a rural area that is home to several residences, wineries and the nursery.

San Diego County Sheriff Kelly Martinez said at an evening news conference that deputies arrived in the area in minutes and found that three people had been shot.

The man who died at the scene was described as 55 to 60 years old and and had gunshot wounds to his upper torso, Steffen said. The victim died before he could be taken to a hospital.

The suspected shooter’s daughter, a woman described as 35 to 40 years old, and a man described as 65 to 70 years old each sustained gunshot wounds to the upper torso, Steffen said. They were found just outside of a barn on the property.

They were taken to a local trauma center to undergo surgery and are expected to survive.

Deputies searched the area and found Barajas Gutierrez in a barn with the dead man, Steffen said. Investigators are still working to determine a motive.

“This is a devastating incident and our hearts go out to everyone who was affected by this tragedy,” the sheriff said at the news conference.

Sheriff’s officials asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the homicide unit at (858) 285-6330 or after hours at (858) 565-5200. Anonymous tips can be made by calling Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
