Shirley Barnes Schwab

LA JOLLA, CA — Shirley Barnes Schwab, loving wife, mother, and grandmothe­r, passed away peacefully at The Cove in La Jolla on December 19, 2022. Shirley, born in Pomona, CA, was preceded in death by her older brother Stanley R. Barnes, and her husband Paul E. Schwab, Jr.

Shirley grew up in the La Verne and Claremont area of California and was especially active in music and sports. After graduating from Claremont High School, she attended Pomona College where she majored in Psychology, was awarded Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated in 1949. She met Paul Schwab at Pomona and they were married four years later.

Following Paul’s graduate studies at Stanford University, they moved to Claremont where they began raising their three children. In 1961 the family moved to the Washington, DC area for 13 years. In 1974, the family moved to La Jolla for seven years before Shirley and Paul made a brief return to the D.C. area. Shirley was involved with ARCS (1987-2009) both in the DC area and San Diego.

Finally, Shirley and Paul settled in their La Jolla home, enjoying golf at the La Jolla Country Club, and tennis and suppers on the beach with family and friends at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. In 2007 they moved to the retirement community of White Sands La Jolla.

Survivors: her children Paul E. Schwab, III (Meredith Austin), Katherine Schwab (Ronald Davidson), Margaret Schwab (Scott Johnston), grandchild­ren Daniel, Anna (Ritvik Mishra), and Laura Schwab, stepgrandc­hild Stephanie Davidson, and numerous relatives and friends.

A Celebratio­n of Life will take place at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 25, 2023, at the La Jolla Presbyteri­an Church, 7715 Draper Ave., La Jolla, CA 92037, and live-streamed at https://ljpres.org/live/.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in the memory of Shirley B.
