Marjorie Lyons Moss
April 15, 1922 - February 2, 2023
SOLANA BEACH — Marjorie Lyons Moss died on February 2, 2023, at the age of 100.
Born on April 15, 1922, in Chicago, IL, to Fred Lyons and Ethel Silcroft Lyons, she passed away peacefully at her home in La Vida Del Mar in Solana Beach, CA.
When her marriage ended, Marjorie and her three young daughters moved from Chicago to start a new life in San Diego, California. She supported her family by working at the Naval Ocean Systems Center as a public information specialist for over 25 years. Her work for the Navy included developing programs for high school students and their teachers with Navy personnel mentors and a lecture series for high school teachers with NOSC scientists and engineers and oceanography specialists. For her outreach work and contribution to local schools for the Navy, she received commendation from Admiral Elmo Zumwalt and the Greater San Diego Industryeducation Council.
Marjorie was an accomplished cook and took great pleasure in developing a cookbook while at NOSC that was sold to provide funding for awards to San Diego high school students and Science Fair winners through the Center’s Science Achievement Club.
She also wrote a column for newspapers in San Diego, taught an adult creative writing class, and was a volunteer tutor for the San Diego Adult Literacy Program.
Marjorie considered her greatest accomplishment, however, raising her three daughters, which she did as a single parent.
She is survived by her daughters, Maureen, Suzanne, and Melissa, and their husbands, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, and by her brother, Marvin Lyons, and sister, June Chaus.
Contributions in her memory may be sent to Jewish Family Service of San Diego.
