Black History Month, bird festival, dog show and Playhouse premiere

Despite having only 28 days, February has a supersized amount of things to do. There are events for animal lovers, including the San Diego Bird Festival and the iconic Silver Bay Kennel Club Dog Show at the Del Mar Fairground­s; a world-premiere musical at the La Jolla Playhouse; and Black History Month events at the San Diego Library and San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art.

Dog Show in Del Mar

Dog lovers and prized pooches will descend on the Del Mar Fairground­s next week for the annual Silver Bay Kennel Club Dog Show, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Feb. 26. Admission is free.

Establishe­d in 1934, the Silver Bay Kennel Club is one of the oldest kennel clubs in Southern California. Besides putting on a great show, the club’s mission is to provide informatio­n and support to dog fanciers from the novice to the seasoned exhibitor.

The show will include a two-day Dog Expo Extravagan­za from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday where attendees can talk with breed experts, trainers and owners and meet the dogs.

AKC Canine Good Citizen Testing will start at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by AKC Trick Dog Title. A beginner puppy event, for dogs 4-6 months, will be Sunday only.

Keepers of the Culture 2023

The San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art will present its Keepers of the Culture 2023 celebratio­n at 5 p.m. Saturday at the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park. The event recognizes local cultural icons from different spaces in the art world, from leaders to artists to musical directors.

This year’s honorees are Ken Anderson, director of UCSD Gospel Choir; Jeanne-cornell Wheat, painter and scultpor; Elliot Lawrence, smooth jazz musician; Johnson Warren, publisher, San Diego Voice & Viewpoint; and Leon Williams, the first Black elected to San Diego City Council and San Diego County Board of Supervisor­s.

Admission is free, but tickets are required as space is limited.

Preview ‘The Outsiders’

Preview performanc­es begin today for La Jolla Playhouse’s world-premiere production of “The Outsiders,” the new musical adapted from S.E. Hinton’s seminal novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s groundbrea­king film.

“The Outsiders” features a book by Pulitzer Prize finalist Adam Rapp, with music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay & Zach Chance) and Tony Award winner Justin Levine. The show is directed by Obie Award winner Danya Taymor.

Evening performanc­es are Tuesday-sunday, with matinees at Saturday and Sunday.

2023 SD Bird Festival

The San Diego Audubon Society is hosting the 2023 San Diego Bird Festival from February 22-26 in the Marina Village Conference Center.

The festival includes hotel lodging for out of towners as well as a series of lectures, discussion­s, social events, bus trips, field trips, walks, talks, programs and more to celebrate the feathered wildlife in our area.

Some events are free and others have additional fees.

SD Library kids craft

Kids can learn about Black history while making paper Kente cloths from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday at the Rancho Bernardo branch of the San Diego Public Library.

The activity explores West African textile’s rich history as well as a story based on African folklore. Recommende­d for children 3-11. No registrati­on is required.
