SAN DIEGO — Dr. Elizabeth (“Liz”) Ann Morrell, DNP, 62, passed peacefully at home, on February 21, 2023 after a 5-year battle with ovarian cancer. Liz was an adored wife, mother, sister, friend, neighbor, profession­al, and community leader.

One of seven children, Liz grew up in Fort Dodge, IA. She attended the University of Iowa, and later moved to San Diego, sight unseen, with two of her Gamma Phi Beta sorority sisters. As an RN, Liz became preeminent in nursing and hospital administra­tion. Liz met her husband in 1985, when they were neighbors in Mission Beach. They raised two sons in their family home in Kensington.

Liz practiced nursing with pride and excellence. Starting at Mercy Hospital in 1983, Liz propelled through successive leadership positions in Scripps Health. Liz’s cancer ultimately ended her career as a Senior Director of Patient Care at Mercy Hospital. Liz found joy inspiring and supporting colleagues in pursuit of educationa­l and career goals. Liz held various honors, awards, and distinctio­ns. Liz loved puzzles, Labrador retrievers, Yahtzee, travel, family and friends. Even after cancer onset in May 2018, Liz lived to the fullest. Liz is predecease­d by parents, Don and Barb Maiwurm. She is survived by her six siblings, husband, John, two sons, Ryan, 30, and Nicholas, 29, and daughter-in-law, Anna, 32. Liz will be remembered and loved by friends, family, colleagues, neighbors, and all those touched by her deep blue eyes and exceptiona­l smile.
