KREJCIKOVA SWEEPS TOP 3

Top-ranked Iga Swiatek was upset by Barbora Krejcikova 6-4, 6-2 in the final of the Dubai Championsh­ips on Saturday.

Krejcikova closed the tournament by beating the top three players in the WTA rankings: No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the quarterfin­als, No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals, then Swiatek. No. 8 Daria Kasaktina was also overcome in the second round.

The Czech is the fifth woman in the Open era to beat the world’s top three at the same event.

“It’s a big achievemen­t and I think it’s going to give me a lot of confidence that I can play with the best ones,” Krejcikova said.

The former French Open champion dominated the final, breaking Swiatek five times. The Pole earned two breaks back in the first set, but Krejcikova then played out a love break and held to love for the set.

In the second, she broke for 2-1 and 5-2 and held serve to win her sixth singles title.

“I showed my best tennis this week,” Krejcikova said. “I was able to play my tennis but also hold the nerves.”

Daniil Medvedev won the Qatar Open when he defeated Andy Murray 6-4, 6-4 in a final matchup of former No. 1s. Medvedev converted fast starts in each set. He reached 4-1 in the first and 3-1 in the second. Murray fought back but Medvedev stifled him and earned his 17th singles title.

• Top seeds Carlos Alcaraz and Cameron Norrie won semifinal matches to set up their second straight final at the Rio Open. Alcaraz worked hard to beat Nicolas Jarry 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-0. Hours earlier, Cameron Norrie topped Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (3). They will meet in today’s final.

Skiing

Marco Schwarz of Austria won a tight giant slalom race Saturday as the men’s World Cup circuit made a stop at the Palisades Tahoe resort for the first time since 1969. Schwarz powered through the course in a combined time of 2 minutes, 23.63 seconds to hold off Swiss standout Marco Odermatt by 0.03 seconds. Rasmus Windingsta­d

of Norway wound up third.

The last time the men were in California — 54 years ago — Reinhard Tritscher of Austria won a giant slalom race and American Billy Kidd

took a slalom event.

• A downhill race in the women’s World Cup was canceled at Crans-montana in the Swiss Alps after initially being delayed for two hours because of fog. World Cup overall leader Mikaela Shiffrin has skipped the Swiss Alps resort to take a break after the worlds.

Locally

The San Diego Gulls will return to AHL action today with a 3 p.m. contest at the Ontario Reign. The Gulls dropped a 5-2 decision to Coachella Valley on Friday at home. Rocco Grimaldi (26th) and Pavol Regenda (12th) scored for the Gulls.

• Missing three key players, the San Diego Sockers scored a 9-8 MASL win at the Chihuahua Savage on Friday night behind three goals from Kraig Chiles.

Local colleges

The Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team (18-9, 17-5 CCAA) finished the regular season with a 61-58 victory over Sonoma State and ended CCAA play with a perfect 11-0 record at home. Greg Milton III scored 19 points with five rebounds to lead the Cougars.

• No. 24 UNLV took a sluggish 65-59 women’s basketball victory over San Diego State to improve to 27-2, 17-0 Mountain West. Mercedes Staples

made 5 of 6 3-pointers, scored 17 points for SDSU (21-9, 11-6).

• The University of San Diego women (17-12, 11-7 WCC) used a strong offensive attack to defeat Portland (20-8, 14-3 WCC), 74-58. Kiera Oakry led USD with 17 points.

• UC San Diego women’s basketball fell to UC Santa Barbara, 64-50. Sydney Brown led the Tritons (12-16, 9-9 Big West) with 14 points.

• The Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team (21-5, 18-4 CCAA) fell 67-59 to Sonoma State (16-12, 13-9 CCAA) in its final regularsea­son game. Jordan Vasquez had 15 points .

• Palomar College’s undefeated women’s basketball team moved to 29-0 with a CCCAA Socal Regional secondroun­d victory, beating Rio Honda 79-49. Deajanae Harvey led five Comets in double figures with 18 points, adding eight rebounds and six assists.

• The No. 6 Cal State San Marcos softball team (10-3, 7-1 CCAA) collected its second CCAA series of the season with a twinbill sweep over Cal State East Bay with wins of 3-1 and 3-2. Gianna Lombardi

went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIS in the opener.

• The San Diego State track and field team finished third at the Mountain West Indoor Championsh­ips in Albuquerqu­e, N.M. Danae Dyer

won the 60m hurdles, Ashley Callahan won the pole vault, and Jada Moore won the 60m dash.
