November 1, 1931 - February 24, 2023

SAN DIEGO — We salute the passing of a true native son of San Diego and one of the last remaining “Captains of the Sea”.

Born in San Diego on the first of November 1931, Leo was the last of six children born to Francisco Correia and Raquel da Luz Correia. His parents emigrated from the small island of Madeira Portugal. Seeking a better life in America, they settled in Pt. Loma. Leo followed in his father’s footsteps, working on the tuna boats as a young boy. He fished with long poles, and as the industry advanced, he was one of the first to fish with the common practice known as “purse seine.”

Leo met the love of his life, Mary Nunes in 1954. They were soon married and would have six children of their own. While Mary raised the kids, Leo was elevated to Captain and worked for Starkist Tuna, operating his own boats – The Mermaid and The Pisces.

After his retirement from the fishing industry, Leo focused on his growing family. He loved attending sporting events for all the grandkids, helping Mary with her garden and watching his beloved Padres. Leo was most proud of his family, his connection to St. Agnes Parish and all things Portuguese.

Leo is preceded in death by Mary Emily Correia, his wife of sixty-six years (Jan 9, 2021) and their son Gregory Correia. Leo is survived by his children: Gary Correia, Donna O’rourke (Daniel), Lisa Rodrigues (Bob), Leo Correia (Laurie), and Darren Correia (Joette), Lynn Correia, wife of Gregory; fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A viewing for Leo will be held Tuesday, March 7, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Beardsley-mitchell Funeral Home, 1818 Sunset Cliffs Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107. A funeral mass will occur Wednesday, March 8, 2023 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at St Agnes Church, 1140 Evergreen Street, San Diego, CA 92106
