boost racial integration, reverse lingering effects of redlining” (Feb. 27): Oh, OK, now we get it. The city’s manic densification policies aren’t designed to boost developer profits or burnish the mayor’s political bona fides. They are intended to redress the harm of racial segregation that took place 70 to 90 years ago. This would make sense if the grandchildren of the actual victims of redlining had a real shot at low-income housing. But very few affordable units are being built or will be built.

Isn’t it exclusionary when a city pledges “housing for all” and instead delivers a glut of expensive condos that working-class families of color can’t buy? Mayoral candidate Todd Gloria promised a roof over the head of every San Diegan at a price they can afford. It’s time for an accounting. We need regular updates on the ratio of new market-rate units to new affordable units. Maybe the reporter will follow up on that.

reached bottom. The council members obviously have developed an understanding to support each other, no matter how rotten the cause. Councilmember Stephen Whitburn has allowed his high-paid chief of staff, Jesus Cardenas, to run a political consulting firm while supposedly working full-time for the city.

When your paper reported the problem, Whitburn (supposedly surprised by the situation), told Cardenas to stop consulting, which he claims to have done. Does anyone believe Cardenas, who remains Whitburn’s chief of staff, will not be running the puppet show from behind the curtains? Does anyone doubt that Cardenas, whose other questionable business practices were noted in the story, will fit in with the current culture of the City Council and mayor’s offices?

I’m sure glad I live in the county.
