WOMAN WHO DIED AT FALLS ID’D

-

The 48-year-old woman who died after falling from a ledge at Three Sisters waterfalls in the Descanso area was identified as a Ladera Ranch resident, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

The incident happened June 8 shortly before 10 a.m. while Sarah Louise Crocker and a teen girl — a family friend — were in the middle pool of the falls, the office said.

Crocker reached out to assist the teen, lost her footing and both fell over the waterfall’s edge to the bottom pool, according to the medical examiner.

Bystanders who saw the fall tried to assist, and when firefighters arrived, they moved Crocker to the trailhead, officials said. She died at the falls.

The 15-year-old teen was taken to a hospital with serious injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening. LYNDSAY WINKLEY U-T

Pipeline work may cause harmless odor

MISSION VALLEY

San Diego residents may smell an odor as San Diego Gas & Electric crews do maintenance work in Mission Valley, but the company said the scent is not harmful.

Crews got started Saturday at 7 a.m. on a gas pipeline near the intersection at Mission Valley and Mission Center roads, as well as the intersection at Friars and Fashion Valley roads, SDG&E said via email.

The work will continue through Friday.

Gas service will not be impacted, but the utility company warned there may be a harmless odor detectable up to a mile from the construction sites. There will also be traffic control measures and potential road closures in place while crews work, which could impact traffic. LAUREN J. MAPP U-T

Police say robbery suspect struck officer

A robbery suspect allegedly struck an officer in the neck with his forearm during an arrest in City Heights on Saturday morning, sending the officer to a hospital with minor injuries, police said.

The incident began after someone called 911 to report his friend had pulled out a pocket knife and stolen his wallet and keys in the area of Home Avenue just east of Interstate 805, according to police.

When officers arrived about 8:45 a.m., the suspect allegedly began hitting a patrol car with a 4-foot metal pole, police said. The suspect struck the officer while fleeing through a nearby Arco gas station.

Police said the man was possibly under the influence of drugs, and a restraint device was used to apprehend him.

Both the officer and the suspect were taken to a hospital and subsequently released with minor injuries, police said.

The suspect was then arrested, but the charges he faces were not immediately known. LAUREN J. MAPP U-T

Victim shot multiple times identified

A 53-year-old man who died after being shot multiple times in East Village last week was identified by police on Tuesday.

Brian Noel, of San Diego, was gunned down Friday around 5:50 a.m. on Logan Avenue near its intersection with 16th and Commercial streets, Lt. Adam Sharki said. The area is at the boundary line between East Village and Barrio Logan.

The shots caused people and the alleged gunman to scatter, police said.

Officers arrived within two minutes and found Noel with more than one bullet wound in his chest, Sharki said. Police locked down the area and began giving medical aid to the man.

Paramedics administered life-saving measures on the man before taking him to a hospital, where he died.

Detectives learned the victim, who was homeless, had an argument with a man before the shooting, Sharki said.

No description of the gunman was available.

It is the second deadly shooting in the area in less than two weeks. On May 23, a 20-year-old man was killed and another man was injured in a shooting just outside San Diego Central Library. Two days later, a suspect was arrested. Neither the slain victim nor the suspect was homeless.

Investigators are searching for any physical evidence, surveillance video or any additional witnesses, Sharki said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 5808477. CALEB LUNETTA U-T
