LA MESA — Edward Ferguson Cornett passed away peacefully on December 22, 2023, at his home in La Mesa, CA, at the age of 94 from cancer. Ed was born in St. Louis, MO, to Breck and Lauretta Cornett. They moved to Tucson, AZ, in 1937 and to San Diego in 1943. Ed was a 1947 graduate of Hoover High School and SDSU (Class of ’53). He served in the US Army (Korean War) as a member of the 40th Infantry Division. He met and married the love of his life, Barbara, at SDSU and raised four children – Kenneth, David, Dan, and Carol Anne. Ed was employed by the County of San Diego for 34 years, retiring in 1986 as Director, Real Property Department. He subsequent­ly embarked upon a second career as Site Acquisitio­n Officer with Homefed Bank and retired again in 1991. Ed was a lifelong collector of antique firearms, a founding member of the Smith & Wesson Collectors Associatio­n, a MENSA, and a life member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, and the NRA. Ed was predecease­d by his son, David, his wife, Barbara, and his beloved dog, Duke. He is survived by his sister, Lucy Jensen, his 3 children, 7 grandchild­ren, and 17 great-grandchild­ren who shared cherished memories of their “Papa Eddie” with him before his death. Per his wishes, a graveside inurnment service at Miramar National Cemetery will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed’s memory are requested to Disabled American Veterans (www. dav.org) or the San Diego Humane Society (www. sdhumane.org). In life and death, we belong to God. Rest well, good and faithful servant.
