TITLE GAMES SET IN TORREY TOURNEY
Some of the top boys basketball players in the nation will be in action today when Sacramento Sheldon meets San Juan Capistrano Jserra for the National Division championship of the 30th annual Torrey Pines Holiday Classic at Torrey Pines High.
The game is set for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff.
Sheldon, 11-1 and ranked No. 2 in the state, is led by Arizona State signee Marcus Bagley and Yaru Harvey, who is being recruited by Santa Clara and Sacramento State.
Jserra, which is 13-2 and ranked No. 24 in the state, has a pair of college signees in Hugo Clarkin (San Jose State) and Ian Martinez (Utah).
Other key games at Torrey Pines include:
• San Jose Bellarmine Prep (9-0, No. 23 in the nation) meets Alameda St. Jose Notre Dame (6-3) in the American Division title game at 3:20 p.m.
At 12:10 p.m., Riverside Poly (10-2, ranked No. 41 in the state and with San Diego State signee Lamont Butler Jr.) plays St. Augustine (14-3, ranked No. 13 in the state and with Texas Tech signee Chibuzo Agbo) in the National Division fifth-place game.
In the final game of the tournament at 8:05 p.m.,
Foothills Christian (9-4, ranked No. 54 in the state and with Yale signee Yassine Gharram) meets San Jose Archbishop Mitty (8-1, No. 8 in the state) for the National Division consolation championship.
And at 1:45 p.m., Poway (11-3, ranked No. 43 in the state) plays Santa Margarita (6-5) in the third-place game of the American Division.
In other Torrey Pines Holiday Classic championships:
• Start of Ohio (6-1) plays Long Beach St. Anthony (15-1, No. 7 in the state) at 8:05 p.m. at Santa Fe Christian for the Senators Division title.
• Christian (10-2) one of three San Diego teams looking for a title, meets Brighton of Utah (6-2) at 8:05 p.m. at St. Augustine High for the Governors Division championship.
• The Mayors Division championship at 5:25 p.m. at Sage Creek High is an allsan Diego affair with Mission Hills (11-3) taking on Otay Ranch (13-1).
The 30th annual Holiday Hoops Classic at Mt. Carmel title game also boasts a pair of San Diego teams with Helix (10-6) playing Serra (8-5) at 8 p.m.
The third-place game at 6:30 p.m. is Carlsbad (8-4) vs. Coronado (8-6).
