Worker burned by steam pipe during fall at construction site
LA JOLLA
A construction worker in his 20s was badly burned by a steam pipe when he fell about 30 feet into a trench on UC San Diego’s campus Thursday, authorities said.
San Diego fire crews used a pulley system to hoist the worker out of the trench. He was taken to a hospital with serious burns and other injuries, San Diego Fire-rescue Department officials said.
The fall at the construction site on the La Jolla campus was reported about 2:30 p.m. The site is near the Structural and Materials Engineering building at Matthews Lane and Voigt Drive.
A spokesman for the state’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health, commonly called CAL/OSHA, said Thursday that the agency did not yet have information about the accident.
