ESCONDIDO
Four people, including a grandmother and her two young grandsons, died Tuesday night after they were struck by a car near an Escondido intersection while out taking a walk, police said.
A 33-year-old man and an 11year-old boy died at the scene, Escondido
police said. A 50-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy died after being taken to Palomar Medical Center.
A woman identified as the mother of the two boys and the daughter of the woman who died set up a Gofundme page Wednesday. She identified the man who died as her mother’s boyfriend. In the first four hours, more than 170 people had donated more than $6,500 to the campaign, which Gofundme confirmed was a legitimate page.
The crash happened a few minutes before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday when a 28-year-old Escondido woman headed north on San Pasqual Valley Road in a 2014 Mazda3 collided with the victims near Oak Hill Drive, said police Lt. Scott Walters. He wouldn’t say where the pedestrians were in the roadway — inside or outside of a crosswalk, for example — at the time of the crash. Walters said investigators have “a lot of evidence” and are working to put it all together.
The investigation is ongoing, he said.
Walters said the four victims
were part of a family unit, although he was unclear of the exact relationship the man had to the children and their grandmother.
The driver remained at the scene, was cooperative with investigators and did not appear to be under the inf luence of drugs or alcohol.
She was transported to a hospital for treatment of minor to moderate injuries.
