Playwrights Project calls for student entries
Playwrights Project is seeking entries for its 36th annual California Young Playwrights Contest for California youths ages 18 and younger. Last year’s contest had 561 plays submitted by students from 56 schools in 26 school districts statewide. Students are encouraged to submit original, unpublished plays written alone or in partnership. Scripts should be at least 10 typed pages, using proper play format (see website for example); there is no maximum page suggestion. Students may submit multiple plays, as long as they are original and unpublished. Playwrights Projects requests entrants disclose any past productions of their play. Contest finalists are honored at a special celebration, and the winning writers workshop their plays for production in Playwrights Project’s annual Plays by Young Writers Festival, to be held in spring 2021. Judges are looking for creative ideas, intriguing and authentic characters, fresh use of language, a story revealed through dialogue and action, and a script that would benefit from further development. Deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. June 1. Visit playwrightsproject.org/programs/contest for details and online submission.
OCEANSIDE
Oceanside Unified School District is opening enrollment for incoming kindergartners to enter its dual-immersion program, which develops biliteracy in English- and Spanishspeaking students from a young age. A virtual interest meeting is being hosted at 6:30 p.m. tonight with details at oside.us/bilingual. The OUSD two-way bilingual immersion program is a full immersion program. Students enter kindergarten or first grade and spend 90 percent of their day in Spanish. As students progress through grade levels, Spanish is decreased and English is increased so that by fifth grade, they have a 50/50 day. After continuing the program through high school, students receive a seal of biliteracy on their diploma. OUSD’S bilingual immersion program opened seven years ago with one kindergarten class, and today has 293 students in grades K-6. Learn more from a video at bit.ly/2l8qyiw featuring the two-way bilingual immersion program. Parents can also use the interest survey link at bit.ly/2l3k0zx, and a staff member will connect with them to answer questions.
