A San Diego police officer responding to a call about a domestic disturbance in Rancho Peñasquitos shot and wounded a man Wednesday night, police said.

It happened a little after 7:30 p.m. on Celtic Court, a cul-de-sac off Donaker Street in a neighborhood of wide, winding streets and two-story homes south of Carmel Valley Road between Black Mountain Road and Camino Del Sur.

The 61-year-old man, whose name was not released, and was reportedly conscious and talking before medics took him from the scene, according to police.

The man underwent surgery and is expected to survive, homicide Lt. Matthew Dobbs said Thursday. The man remains hospitalized and under guard.

The man’s wife called 911 around 7:20 p.m. to report some type of domestic incident, Capt. Rich Freedman told reporters Wednesday. During the call, the dispatcher could hear the man “talking about wanting to be shot by police officers,” and there were indications there were firearms in the home.

Several officers responded, initially staying away from the home because of the alleged threats and apparent presence of guns,

Freedman said. But they decided to move up to the house when the dispatcher told them she could hear over the phone what sounded like a physical confrontation between the couple inside the home.

The officers approached the couple on the front porch. When officers tried to take the man into custody, he pulled out a handgun from his waistband and “began to raise it in the direction of the officers,” Dobbs said.

One officer fired a single round, striking the man in his torso, according to Freedman. No officers were injured, nor was the woman who called 911.

Investigators recovered the man’s gun after the shooting, Freedman said.

Officers at the scene were equipped with bodyworn cameras that recorded the shooting.
