Readers debate how to handle Donald Trump

-

Re “Impeachment looming, Democrats urge Pence to help oust Trump” (Jan. 11): The raging debate over removing the president from office — whether via impeachment or invoking the 25th Amendment — has exposed deep fissures created by Donald Trump in the Republican Party.

I am a Democrat, but totally respect the other party, at least what it used to be. I have been horrified and sickened to watch so many leaders allow Trump to wreak havoc for the last four years. They seem to be finding their voice only now. Perhaps now the party can rebuild without “Trump Fever” sending it sideways.

As people are awakening to a fresh perspective, Republicans can and should see that this is a tremendous opportunity — here and now — to return to sanity, strength and greater unity. I hope they will work together with Democrats to dethrone Trump, now and forever.

The recent terrible events in our nation's Capitol would foretell the demise of the Republican Party. This will not happen as the rank and file of the party did not seem to be represented within the mobs that stormed the Capitol.

President Trump will fade away much like O.J. Simpson. Once people are tainted by their actions, nothing can change the perception of their character. Regardless of Trump's culpability in inciting the recent riots, his demeanor and narcissistic persona are tell-tale signs that he was involved.

His legacy will be tied to his final days. It is sad because he did accomplish a lot for the country that will never be acknowledged.
