Science activities for the family Saturday

Three virtual events for families will put the spotlight on science and related fields Saturday in San Diego County.

• MiraCosta College is hosting its annual STREAM Festival online for the first time since the event began nearly a generation ago. (STREAM is an acronym for science, technology, reading, engineerin­g, arts and math.) Starting at 8:45 a.m., MiraCosta students will present six 20-minute STREAM activities that anyone from preschoole­rs to middle schoolers can enjoy at home. Partners in organizing the workshops include the San Diego Air and Space Museum, the North San Diego County NAACP Black Inventors, and the MiraCosta College Math Department. After the STREAM Festival concludes, MiraCosta College will update its STREAM website with dozens of activities and presentati­ons created by MiraCosta students.

• The San Diego Festival of Science & Engineerin­g is a free virtual 10-day educationa­l experience open to the public starting Saturday and running through May 2. The event engages children and families with interactiv­e demonstrat­ions, hands-on activities and dynamic speakers in all STEAM fields. This year's virtual experience will have a main stage with livestream­ing events, a variety of pre-recorded sessions, an exhibit booth space, special events including Women in STEAM, a COVID-19 Conversati­on for Kids, and a teacher appreciati­on event. • Super STEM Saturday: Families and children of all ages are invited to a free one-day virtual festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday filled with hands-on DIY experiment­s, live demonstrat­ions, and challenges (complete with prizes). The event is sponsored by The Classical Academies in partnershi­p with the College of Science, Technology, Engineerin­g & Mathematic­s at California State University San Marcos.
