Clayton A. ‘”Schenk”’ Schenkelberg
SAN DIEGO — America lost another hero, and we lost our father. Pearl Harbor survivor and 30-year USN Veteran Clayton Schenkelberg went home to God. His wife of 74 years, Alithea, was awaiting him there, with two of his sons and many friends, family and loved ones. Clayton was father of 7, grandfather of 17 and great grandfather of many.
After a distinguished Navy career, Clayton worked for
San Diego City Schools and retired as a Head Custodian. He donated countless hours to Our Lady of Grace Church collecting donations for and running their food pantry. As Alithea descended into the throes of Alzheimer’s Disease, Clayton, then in his 90s, became her care giver and provided her with the love, dignity and support she needed and deserved for many years until her passing almost 4 years ago. Clayton was a loving husband, caring dad, co-worker, friend and a noted “Card Shark”. Our hero is gone, but NEVER forgotten. His church service will be May 6th at 1030 am at Our Lady of Grace Church and is open to all. Hawaiian attire at the service would be appreciated. Due to covid restrictions, his interment will be private.
