The Padres and Mariners played the first game at the new Safeco Field (now T-Mobile Park) in Seattle. The Padres rallied for a 3-2 victory with two runs in the ninth, making a winner of Will Cunnane, who got the last out in the bottom of the eighth. Dan Miceli earned the save. Mariners reliever Jose Mesa blew the save, walking Ruben Rivera (who stole second), John Vander Wal and Ed Giovanola. After striking out Dave Magadan, Mesa walked Quilvio Veras to bring in the tying run, and Eric Owens hit a sac fly off Paul Abbott to bring in the eventual winning run.
