EX-LJCD PLAYERS MAKE USA SQUADS

Two players with ties to La Jolla Country Day will represent USA Basketball in major internatio­nal women’s tournament­s this summer.

Te-hina Paopao, the San Diego Section Player of the Year in 2019-20, has been named to the U19 team that will play in the 16-team FIBA U19 World Cup from Aug. 7-19 in Debrecen, Hungary.

Breya Cunningham, an All-CIF player this season as a sophomore, will play in the FIBA Americas U16 Championsh­ips from Aug. 16-22 in Santiago, Chile.

Paopao was an All-Pac-12 selection this season as a freshman at Oregon.

She averaged 10.2 points, 4.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds for the Ducks.

The USA U19 team will play Italy, Australia and Egypt in pool play in Hungary.

Since 1985, the USA U19 team has won eight gold medals, a silver and a bronze. Since 2005, the team is 62-3 with seven golds and a silver.

The 6-foot-4 Cunningham averaged 16.6 points, 10.9 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots a game this season for the Torreys.

The FIBA Americas Cup features teams from North, South and Central America as well as the Caribbean.

Since the start of the event in 2009, Team USA is 30-1 with five golds and a bronze.

Free agent signings

Right-handed pitcher Jamison Hill (Rancho Bernardo/Fresno State) signed as a free agent with the Arizona Diamondbac­ks after the conclusion of the MLB Draft.

Hill was 5-3 with 49 strikeouts in 721⁄3 innings for the Bulldogs.

Right-hander Cameron Leonard (UC San Diego) signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

He was 5-6 with a 4.70

ERA for the Tritons with 35 strikeouts in 742⁄3 innings.

College commits

Camren Willis, the San Diego Section Division I boys long jump champion, has committed to Cal State Fullerton.

Willis had a county-leading mark of 23 feet, 61⁄4 inches in the long jump as well as a county-best 6-7 in the high jump.

• Carlsbad senior Renza Miller has signed to play women’s basketball at Southern Connecticu­t State, while Kaylie Ronon has signed to play women’s soccer at Notre Dame.

• Zach Daudet, a fouryear starter at Clairemont, has accepted a baseball scholarshi­p to NCAA Division II Regis University in Denver.

A shortstop, Daudet hit .429 with three homers and 19 steals. As a pitcher, he had a 1.52 ERA. He was selected to play on the West All-Star Team for the Padres High School All-Star Game in Petco Park.

• Brielle Carre, the starting left fielder at Torrey Pines, has accepted an academic and athletic scholarshi­p to play at Roosevelt University, an NAIA college in Chicago.

Good showing

The WAVE 17 volleyball team placed second in the 36-team Open Division of the Girls Junior National Championsh­ips in Las Vegas, losing to Sunshine LA in the title match.

Brooklyn Burns, who plays at Torrey Pines, and Avery Tatum of La Costa Canyon were named to the all-tournament team as the WAVE 17 went 9-2.

Football honors

Johnny Scott of St. Augustine and Deric Woo of Cathedral Catholic are among the receiver finalists at the Quest For 7 Football Camp and Competitio­n at Rancho Santa Margarita.
