In hopes of connecting dogs and cats with their forever homes, the San Diego Animal Support Foundation is holding a Howl-O-Ween Hounds MEGA Adoption event next month, and it is looking for volunteers to help pull it off.

COVID-19 relegated the group to one online adoption event and one abbreviated in-person adoption event last year, but San Diego Animal Support Foundation spokeswoman Darlene White said there will be about 20 rescue groups at Grossmont Center from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Oct. 16.

The foundation hosts seasonally themed animal adoption events during the year at Grossmont Center, teaming with dozens of rescue groups to bring together dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, turtles, tortoises and more. This year’s event will have only dogs and cats, White said.

Some of the groups expected to be at the event are Amazing Strays Rescue, Friends of Cats Shelter, Friends of Humane Services Tijuana, Labradors & Friends Rescue, Open Arms Rescue, Tragic to Magic and Woofs & Wags Dog Rescue.

Some of the rescue groups depend heavily on the Grossmont Center events, and have been asking the foundation for months to hold another event, but White said because of the pandemic, it has been hard to get one organized. A change in ownership of Grossmont Center also delayed things.

White said about 20 of the same rescue groups that have been at past events will be there again. She said there is a dire need for local volunteers to help set up rescue groups’ tables and tents around 9 a.m. and tear them down at the end of the event. Interested volunteers ages 18 an older should contact Naomi Palmer at Naomi@sdshelters.org

Grossmont Center is at 5500 Grossmont Center Drive in La Mesa.
