SAN DIEGO TEMPS BELOW 70 FOR LONGEST STREAK IN SIX YEARS
The National Weather Service says that San Diego’s daytime high temperature remained below 70 degrees on Wednesday for the 37th consecutive day.
By mid-afternoon, the temperature had only reached 65 and was not trending upward.
This is the longest that the city has stayed below 70 since 2015-16, when it remained unusually cool for 38 days between Dec. 10 and Jan. 16.
San Diego’s seasonal high in December is 66. But it is common for the temperature to get much higher.
There’s a small chance San Diego could reach 70 on Thursday. But forecasters say it is more likely that the temperature will peak at 67.
“The high pressure systems that bring us warmer weather have not been building back strong,” said Samantha Connolly, a weather service forecaster.
“It looks we won’t get back to 70 through next Tuesday.”
That may seem like a long time. But in historical terms, it isn’t. San Diego experienced 109 days of sub-70 weather between Dec. 13, 1877 and March 31, 1878, Connolly said. from cardio-pulmonary issues, and Winky, a puppy with neurological problems.
“Five thousand dollars covers a month’s worth of our vet bills,” she adds.
Thakore says people commented that they were shocked anyone would do this. “Seeing them smile was amazing.” He describes it as his way of bringing joy to the community.
Today, Aspen’s Winter Wonderland, at 6052 La Jola Blvd., is slated to be disassembled — the trees will disappear into boxes, lights will be unplugged and coiled, and the decorative presents put in storage.
What about next year? “I feel almost bound to do it,” Thakore says. “I think it’s going to be an annual thing. … I try to do everything bigger every year.”
