Toreros update: A second-half defensive collapse ruined USD’s chances of pulling off an upset at BYU on Thursday. The Cougars shot 69.2 percent in the second half (18 of 26) in a 79-71 win. USD was outrebounded 38-28. Leading rebounder Terrell Brown-Soares played 17 minutes without grabbing a board. He has just six rebounds the past three games. After missing seven games with a broken right hand, Jase Townsend scored 14 points. The University of Denver transfer is shooting 47.1 percent on 3s bug just 36.8 percent inside the arc.

USD announced its postponed home game against Gonzaga will be played Feb. 3 at Jenny Craig Pavilion. The game will tip off at 6 p.m. and be televised by ESPN2. The Toreros were scheduled to open West Coast Conference play on Dec. 30 at home against the Zags but the game was postponed when there were multiple positive COVID-19 cases inside the USD program. Gonzaga (15-2) is the No. 1-ranked team in the nation. Barring meeting in the WCC Tournament, it will be the only time USD plays the Bulldogs this season. USD is not scheduled to visit the Zags.

Tigers update: Because of COVID protocols, Pacific hasn’t played in 10 days. The Tigers have lost five straight by an average of 15.6 points and eight of their last nine. Pacific is offensively challenged, ranking 301st in scoring (65.6 points), 261st in shooting (42.4 percent) and 297th in free-throw shooting (66.8).

Up next: Monday at Santa Clara, 6 p.m.
