POINT GUARD NAVARRO COMES UP BIG FOR NO. 2 CATHEDRAL
To the surprise of no one, the first option for Cathedral Catholic High’s girls basketball team is 6-foot-4 senior center Ice Brady.
That means point guard Izzy Navarro, also a senior, is the distributor.
Until Navarro gets hot like the 5-foot-8 senior did Friday at Scripps Ranch.
The Loyola Marymountbound Navarro scored 29 points as the No. 2-ranked Dons downed the No. 7 Falcons 64-41 on the road.
“My job is to get the offense going,” said Navarro, who scored 18 points in the second quarter. “Get the ball to whoever is scoring. When I’m scoring, I just need to find a balance.
“Tonight, my shots just came to me, which is OK even though for me an assist feels better than a basket.”
Navarro’s outburst left the Dons (13-2, 3-0) atop the Western League ahead of the Falcons (15-4, 3-1).
This was the 11th consecutive win for Cathedral and the eighth straight win over Scripps Ranch.
The Dons, who have played in three consecutive San Diego Section Open Division title games, have won the last 16 games against teams from San Diego.
Cathedral’s offense still got 15 points from Brady, who also had 10 rebounds, and 10 points apiece from Taryn Johnson and junior Gizel Navarro.
“It’s going to be weird next year without Ice, Taryn and my sister,” Izzy Navarro said. “Hopefully, LMU will let me just play my game.”
Scripps Ranch was led by senior Amanda Kramer with 19 points, the lone Falcon in double figures.
With Izzy Navarro leading the way, the Dons have had great success in each of the last three seasons.
“Those three seniors are the three-headed monster,” Dons coach Jackie Turpin said. “They’re the reason why we’re on a winning streak at the moment. Someone is always hot, so you can’t take away all three.
“And with Izzy hot like she was tonight, it makes defending against Ice almost impossible.”
That should also not surprise anyone either.
