St. Augustine High School announced the search for a head football coach, replacing Joe Kremer, who has been on the staff at the school for 11 years, the last four as the head coach.

Kremer was part of Saints teams which earned three San Diego Section titles, three section runnersup finishes and three Western League crowns.

“We appreciate Joe’s commitment and dedication to the boys on our campus,” said Mike Haupt, Saints assistant principal for auxiliary services.

“We constantly evaluate the school’s needs and, we have decided that now was an important time for a fresh start.”

The Saints were 2-9 last season, the team’s worst finish since going 2-9 in 1998.

The Saints were 2-2 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Kremer’s 2019 team was 8-3, but the 2018 team was 10-4, won the San Diego Section Division I championship in a thrilling 21-20 overtime win over Helix, then lost to Simi Valley Grace Brethren in the Southern California 2-AA playoffs.

Kremer’s teams were 0-4 against archrival Cathedral Catholic and were outscored 159-49.

St. Augustine Principal James Horne said Kremer was known on campus as a man who cared to develop the life skills of students he taught and coached.

“Joe has coached much more than football in his decade at Saints,” Horne said. “He has always been intent on developing young men in a program that values academics and character.”

Saints officials didn’t put a timeline on replacing Kremer, but spring practice is only weeks off, so speed is essential.

“Joe has been a great coach for our boys over the years, never losing his focus on what is important: We wish him well.” said Matt Linville, Saints athletic director.
