Hello, old friend(s)
In 2019 and ’20, the Padres made two trades sending eight players to Cleveland. A look at how those players are faring as the teams prepare to meet the next two days:
RHP Cal Quantrill: The Padres’ first pick in 2016, the 27-year-old Quantrill has a 3.27 ERA through his first four starts (22 IP) this year. Since the trade, Quantrill is 9-4 with a 2.85 ERA in 1861⁄3 innings.
1B/OF Josh Naylor: The 24-year-old is hitting .313/.340/.479 with two homers in 13 games since returning from a gruesome ankle injury. He has a .691 OPS since he was traded.
C Austin Hedges: The Padres’ former catcher of the future is hitting .140/.204/ .260 in 17 games this year and has a .170/.213/.293 line in 380 plate appearances since the trade.
INF Owen Miller: The 25-year-old Miller, a third-round pick in 2018, debuted in 2021 (.551 OPS) and is hitting .377/.444/.660 with two homers and an MLBbest nine doubles through 17 games this year.
SS Gabriel Arias: Originally signed for $1.9 million as part of the Padres’ 201617 international class, the 22-year-old Arias is hitting .197/.269/.380 with three homers and three steals to start 2022 at Triple-A Columbus. Arias is ranked No. 5 in the Guardians’ system and No. 100 in Baseball America’s top 100 prospects. Currently sidelined with a broken hand.
LHP Joey Cantillo: A 16th-round pick in 2017, the 22-year-old Cantillo — the Guardians’ No. 34 prospect, according to Baseball America — had injuries limit him to 13 innings in 2021. He’s at Double-A Akron to start 2022, with a 4.50 ERA over 15 innings so far.
DH Franmil Reyes: Sent to Cleveland with Logan Allen and minor leaguer Victor Nova in three-team trade that reeled in Taylor Trammell (now with the Mariners), Reyes has been ice cold to start 2022 (38 strikeouts in 82 plate appearances, .386 OPS). He has 51 homers and a .779 OPS since he was traded in July 2019.
LHP Logan Allen: The 24-year-old has a 4.50 ERA in six innings this year in the Guardians’ bullpen and a 5.45 ERA in 691⁄3 innings since he was traded.
