COUGARS HOPING TO HOST SOFTBALL REGIONAL

No. 8 D- II team needs to win CCAA tournament first

The Cal State San Marcos softball team, regularsea­son champions of the CCAA, open play Thursday in the conference tournament at Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Cougars (39-9), ranked No. 8 nationally in the NCAA Division II and No. 1 in the West Region, will play the winner of Cal State Dominguez HillsCal State Monterey Bay in first round of the doubleelim­ination tournament.

The tournament winner advances to the West Regionals, which the Cougars are hoping to host.

Cal State San Marcos is led by freshman pitchers Savannah Coyle (Rancho Buena Vista), who is 17-3 with five saves and a 1.43 ERA, and Jayline Schloss, who is 13-2 with a 1.92 ERA.

Redshirt freshman Paige Donnelly (Poway) leads the hitters, batting .442 with seven home runs, 15 doubles and 54 RBIs.

Community College baseball

Palomar College, Grossmont and Southweste­rn, members of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, have all qualified for the Southern California Regionals.

Palomar (31-9), the conference champion, hosts No. 12 Pasadena (27-13) in a double-eliminatio­n affair Friday and Saturday.

The Comets, who have won 13 straight and are 18-3 at home, are led by pitchers Logan Parker

(Del Norte), who is 10-1 with a 2.87 ERA, and Dylan Delvecchio (Mission Hills), who is 6-1 with a 3.42 ERA. Jack Sanders

(Poway) leads the hitters, batting .466 while Devlin Lindeman (Temescal Canyon) is hitting .365 with 14 homers and 56 RBIs.

Grossmont (22-16) is seeded No. 14 and plays Friday and Saturday at No. 3 Riverside (29-11). The Griffins are led by pitcher Kyle Dobyns

(West Hills), who is 6-4 with a 4.37 ERA, and Zavien Watson (Cathedral Catholic), who is hitting .379 with nine homers and 34 RBIs.

Southweste­rn (24-16) is seeded No. 15 and has a play-in game today at No. 18 Los Angeles Valley (2614). The winner advances to play at No. 2-seeded Glendale (33-6) Friday and Saturday.

The Jaguars are led by pitcher Jaden Wilcox (El Cajon), who is 6-3 with a 3.49 ERA, and Zavier Gonzalez, who is hitting .385.

This weekend’s winners advance to the Super Regionals.

Community College softball

PCAC champion Palomar College (31-7) hosts No. 11 Ventura (27-12) in the best-of-3 Southern California Regionals.

Seeded No. 6, the Comets are led by pitchers India Caldwell (Mission Vista), who is 17-3 with an 0.66 ERA with 134 strikeouts in 127 innings, and

Farrah Steffany (Rancho Buena Vista), who is 13-3 with a 1.37 ERA.

Allyson Amato (Mission Hills) leads the hitters, batting .500 with 34 RBIs. Taylor Harrison (Rancho Bernardo) is hitting .391 with 16 doubles and 40 RBIs while Mackenzie Lefebvre (Escondido) is hitting .430 with five homers and 26 RBIs.

Palomar has 88 stolen bases and have been caught just seven times.

Imperial Valley (14-8) is seeded No. 14 and plays at No. 3 Cypress (31-11) this weekend.

IVC is led by pitcher

Yeraldine Carrion, who is 12-3 with an 0.51 ERA. She has 233 strikeouts in 110 innings.

This weekend’s winners advance to the Super Regionals.
