Don’t forget role drugs can play in crossings

The U-T’s front-page article and three supporting opinion pieces understand­ably express sorrow over tragic mishaps by climbers of our tall border walls. Yet in all that ink, we see no mention of drugs!

Cartels recruit and aid these poor folks in order to facilitate the flow of Chinese-made fentanyl smuggled across our borders. Fentanyl fatalities, now a top cause of death among American young adults, far outnumber the casualties among those who dare our walls, risk our deserts and rivers, and defy immigratio­n laws.
