Two killed, three injured in Midway District crash

Two people were killed and another three injured in the Midway District Saturday night when a pickup hit a median, went airborne and landed on a minivan, police said.

The crash was reported shortly after 9 p.m. at the intersecti­on of Rosecrans Street and Sports Arena Boulevard, San Diego police said.

The minivan — a 2015 Toyota Sienna — was headed north on Rosecrans while a 1999 Toyota Tacoma was traveling west on Sports Arena at a high rate of speed, police said. The pickup hit the center median, f lew into the air and landed on top of the minivan.

A male and a female occupant in the minivan died at the scene. Two others in the vehicle suffered unspecifie­d injuries and were taken to a hospital.

The pickup driver, a 31-year-old man, was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that included broken bones, police said.

Roads in the area were closed for several hours. No further informatio­n was immediatel­y available.
