SAN DIEGO COUNTY SHERIFF

-

There are seven candidates for San Diego County Sheriff on the June 7 ballot in the race to replace retired Sheriff Bill Gore, who may be most remembered for the high number of deaths that occurred in county jails on his watch. The problem persists. There was another jail death Thursday, the ninth this year, all since Gore left. The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board sent each candidate a 10-question survey, published three partial Q&As Sunday and is publishing three more today, from retired sheriff’s Sgt. Charles “Chuck” Battle, police Capt. John “Gundo” Gunderson and peace officer Jonathan Peck. Visit sandiegouniontribune.com/sheriff to see complete responses from all but one candidate, who did not reply to repeated requests. The top two vote-getters will advance to a Nov. 8 election.
