Driver, 33, accused of DUI, manslaughter in fatal crash
A 33-year-old man was arrested Monday, accused of manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol in a crash that killed two minivan passengers in the Midway District, police said.
San Diego police also allege that Edgar Espinosa was driving without a license when he crashed his pickup into the center median, sending the truck into the air before it landed on top of the minivan at the intersection of Rosecrans Street and Sports Arena Boulevard about 9 p.m. Saturday.
Police said Espinosa’s 1999 Toyota Tacoma had been headed west on Sports Arena at “a high rate of speed.” The minivan — a 2015 Toyota Sienna — was stopped at a red light on northbound Rosecrans.
The two minivan passengers who died were identified as 81-yearold woman, Suad Alsamarai, and a 23-year-old man, Ahmed Mazin Salah Alrawi, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office. The two El Cajon residents died at the scene.
The 21-year-old driver of the minivan and a 46-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Espinosa suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. He was released Monday and then booked into San Diego Central Jail.
Police said the investigation was ongoing and asked anyone with information to call the San Diego Police Department at (619) 5312000 or the Crime Stoppers tip line at (888) 580-8477.
