AZTECS SOFTBALL IN TEMPE REGIONAL, WILL TAKE ON LSU

-

The San Diego State softball team will play No. 20/18 LSU in the NCAA Tempe Regional, the NCAA announced Sunday. It is 12th NCAA tournament bid for the Aztecs (37-14) but first since the 2015 season.

SDSU, which earned an automatic bid to the tournament after winning the Mountain West regular-season title with a 20-4 record, will play the Tigers (34-21) at 5 p.m. on Friday in Tempe, Ariz., on the campus of No. 8/4 Arizona State (39-9), the tournament’s No. 8 overall seed. Cal State Fullerton (36-20) is the other team in the doubleelimination regional.

The entire NCAA Tempe Regional will be broadcast live on ESPN Networks.

San Diego State is 16-22 all-time in the NCAA tourney.

The Aztecs are playing in Tempe for the fifth time out of their 12 appearances in an NCAA regional (also 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2014), owning a 4-8 record at Farrington Stadium.

SDSU is the only team to make the NCAA Tournament from the Mountain West.

A dramatic penalty save might have kept the Premier League title race alive. Riyad Mahrez stepped up to take an 86th-minute spot kick for Manchester City knowing that converting it would virtually secure another league championship for his team. It was saved by West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski and City had to settle for a 2-2 draw to leave Liverpool still with hope. City is now four points clear of Liverpool, which heads to Southampton on Tuesday needing at least a point to take the title race to the final round next Sunday.

AC Milan’s lengthy wait for the Italian league title will last another week at least. Second-half goals from Rafael Leao and Theo Hernandez

saw Milan beat Atalanta 2-0 and it now only needs one point from its final match to secure its first Serie A title since 2011.

Sam Kerr scored her second Women’s FA Cup final goal in extra time to complete Chelsea’s domestic double with a 3-2 victory over Manchester City. The Australia forward struck from outside of the penalty area in the 99th minute in front of a record attendance of 49,094 for the competition at Wembley Stadium.

Jesus Ferreira scored two goals and FC Dallas (6-1-4) cruised to a 3-1 victory over host LA Galaxy (6-4-1) on Saturday night. Chula Vista native Paul Arriola stretched the lead to 2-0 with a score in the 20th minute.

Kylian Mbappe won the French league’s best player award for the third time in his career. He diplomatically swerved a question about his future. Mbappe is out of contract at PSG next month and touted to join Karim Benzema at Real Madrid.
