La Costa Canyon | Boys swimming Dropping more than a second off his previous best, the Mavericks senior placed third in the California state championsh­ip 200-yard freestyle, clocking a 1:38.39. His previous best was 1:39.71.

Cathedral Catholic | Boys volleyball Pounding down 25 kills, the senior led the Dons to the section Open Division title in a 21-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-23 victory over Westview. It was Cathedral’s 13th consecutiv­e victory.

Mission Bay | Boys track Completing a rare triple, Cheeks, a sophomore, won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.58, the long jump at 23-0½ and the triple jump at 46-3 in the section Division II prelims at University City High.

Madison | Boys volleyball Collecting 16 kills, the Warhawks senior led his team to its 16th straight win of the season, 25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23 over El Camino’s Wildcats for the Division II crown.

El Camino | Girls track Improving more than a foot, the Wildcats senior bounded into the section lead in the girls triple jump, hitting a wind-legal 38-4½ in the Division I track preliminar­ies.

Helix | Baseball Clinging to second place in the tough Grossmont Hills League, Woods, a senior, led the Scotties to a 2-1 record with a grand slam, a double and six RBIs. Helix earned the No. 8 Open Division seed.
