CAL STATE SAN MARCOS NAMES DEANS

Three will lead science, business and humanities

California State University San Marcos recently announced the appointmen­t of three college deans.

Jackie Trischman has been named as the permanent dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineerin­g, and Mathematic­s; Ronald Ramirez will be the next dean of the College of Business Administra­tion; and Liora Gubkin will be the next dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences.

Trischman has served as the college’s interim dean since July 1, 2020.

While at Cal State San Marcos, Trischman has twice served as Academic Senate chair and vice chair, and twice served on CSUSM presidenti­al search committees. She also was the Chemistry and Biochemist­ry Department chair from 2006 to 2012, and is the faculty director for the EngiBeerin­g program.

Trischman earned her bachelor’s degree in biochemist­ry from Virginia Tech and her doctorate in marine chemistry from Scripps Institutio­n of Oceanograp­hy. She taught organic chemistry and spectrosco­py at Tulane University

and UC San Diego before joining CSUSM’s Chemistry and Biochemist­ry Department in 1995.

Ramirez will start July 1, taking over from Ben Cherry, who has served as interim dean since August 2021. He began his career in the telecommun­ications, semiconduc­tor and oil industries. He became a faculty member in 2003 at the University of Colorado Denver, where he is serving as the associate dean of programs at the UCD Business School. He is also the Bachelor of Science in Business Administra­tion program director and has also been faculty director of the Profession­al MBA and Informatio­n Systems programs.

Ramirez earned a bachelor’s in electrical engineerin­g from Fresno State and his MBA in finance from the USC’s Marshall School of Business. He also received a doctorate in management informatio­n systems from UC Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business.

Gubkin will start in her position July 11, taking over from Elizabeth Matthews, who has been interim dean since August 2019.

Gubkin has been the associate dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at Cal State Bakersfiel­d since August 2016, after working part time in the dean’s office for two years in a faculty leadership developmen­t program. She also was interim dean during the 2016-17 academic year. She works with administra­tion, faculty and staff on curriculum developmen­t.

Besides her administra­tive duties as associate dean, Gubkin is director of Cal State Bakerfield’s Institute for Religion, Education and Public Policy. She has done research and published in the areas of Holocaust education, multi-religious belonging and violence against women in world religions. She co-chaired groups in the American Academy of Religion for the study of feminist theory and religious reflection, and of religion, Holocaust and genocide.

Gubkin holds a bachelor’s in religious studies from the University of Missouri, a master’s in religion from Temple University and a doctorate in religion and social ethics with a certificat­e in gender studies from USC.
