CHRISTON SR.’S MESSAGE POINTS TOWARD HOMECOMING
Former Madison High running back Kenan Christon is expected to transfer from USC to SDSU, according to multiple sources.
Christon did not immediately respond to messages requesting a comment. However, the player’s father made a cryptic reference on Twitter, tweeting “wait for it.”
Kenan Christon Sr.’s message included a graphic with the word “LOADING” on top of a blurred image of a red and black Aztecs jersey No. 23 with Snapdragon Stadium in the background.
Christon, a 5-foot-10, 185pounder with sprinter’s speed, adds even more depth to perhaps the deepest position on the roster.
While the Aztecs have several seasoned running backs — led by super seniors
Chance Bell and Jordan Byrd — no one has stepped forward to sew up the lead role assumed the past two seasons by the graduated Greg Bell.
Christon was a two-sport star at Madison who rushed for 980 yards and 11 touchdowns in the fall of 2018 for the Warhawks football team and won state titles in the 100 and 200 meters the following spring on the track team.
He participated in both sports at USC as well.
As a true freshman in 2019, Christon initially was listed as the Trojans’ No. 5 tailback but earned significant playing time by midseason and finished with 373 yards on 68 carries.
In the truncated 2020 season, Christon carried 10 times for 70 yards in a backup role.
Last season, Christon was absent from the USC football team shortly after the team’s season-opening 30-7 victory over San Jose State on Sept. 4. The only explanation given at the time was that he was “removed from team activities.”
The Los Angeles Times reported two months later Christon had been suspended following an altercation with another USC student.

Boxing
Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will complete their memorable fight trilogy in September.
Alvarez and Golovkin will resume their rivalry Sept. 17 after a four-year break.
The fighters met in 2017 and again in 2018. They fought to a split draw in the first bout, and Alvarez won a narrow majority decision in the second meeting.
The third fight will be a 168-pound super middleweight contest between the 40-year-old Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) and Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs), who will turn 32 this summer. Alvarez is the undisputed world champion at 168 pounds, holding all four major titles.
Hockey
The United States secured its spot in the quarterfinals of the ice hockey world championship on the last day of group play with a 4-2 win over Norway.
That sets up a tricky quarterfinal game against undefeated Switzerland. The Swiss beat Germany 4-3 in a shootout to make it seven wins from seven games.
