NONPROFITS HOST EVENTS FOR ALZHEIMER’S AND BRAIN AWARENESS MONTH

Education for those living with disease, their caregivers

Those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their family caregivers often face confusion and frustratio­n as they navigate the diagnosis. During Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month this June, several local nonprofits are hoping to help with educationa­l programmin­g.

There are roughly 98,610 seniors living with dementia in the county, The Alzheimer’s Project reports, and as the population of people 55 and older continues to grow, so will the number of those living with the disease.

Although Alzheimer’s is a degenerati­ve disease with no cure, knowing more about the various stages can help caregivers through its progressio­n.

Mobility Assistance & Safety (In Spanish) Friday, noon-2 p.m.

The Southern Caregivers Resource Center will host a free, virtual workshop on mobility tools and tips for Spanish-speaking family caregivers. The webinar will cover caring for a loved one with mobility issues and give tips on how to both take care of the care recipient while managing one’s own physical and mental health. Date with a Cure Tuesday, 9-11 a.m., virtual event

Alzheimer’s San Diego is hosting its free, annual event where attendees can hear about the latest in Alzheimer’s treatments and research. Held virtually via Zoom, this gives people living with dementia and their family caregivers a forum to ask experts questions. To register online, visit alzsd.org/ events/date-with-a-cure.

Memory Loss and Control of Finances June 15, 5:30-7:30 p.m. 6811 La Jolla Blvd. La Jolla, CA 92037

Monarch Cottages will host a panel of speakers who will cover what people living with dementia and their loved ones need to know about managing finances when experienci­ng memory loss. After starting with a half-hour-long reception, the Alzheimer’s San Diego’s Preston Stocking, senior clinical care coach, will be joined by an estate planning attorney, a fiduciary and a bank manager during this event at the La Jolla Community Center.

Living with a new diagnosis can leave someone diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers with a lot of questions. This free webinar from the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n San Diego and

Imperial counties chapter will answer questions about the effect of Alzheimer’s, the stages of the disease, treatments and current research.

The Longest Day Tijuana Estuary Walk

June 21, 1 p.m. Imperial Beach Boulevard and Third Street

As part of the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n’s annual “The Longest Day” fundraiser, volunteer Mark McDonald will host a 2 mile walk through the Tijuana Estuary. The event aims to raise funding for dementia research.
