MUSGROVE AN ALL-STAR FOR 1ST TIME

- BY KEVIN ACEE kevin.acee@sduniontribune.com

Joe Musgrove is an AllStar.

The Padres right-hander was named Sunday to the National League roster for the July 19 game at Dodger Stadium.

“I’ve been trying to get this selection for the last five, six years,” said Musgrove, a Grossmont High graduate who is in his second season with the Padres and seventh season in the major leagues. “So just for it to come in this year when I’m back at home, it’s a little more special.”

Musgrove and Manny Machado, the NL’s starting third baseman, are the Padres’ only All-Stars.

“There’s no harder worker than Joe out there,” said Machado, who will be making his sixth All-Star appearance. “To finally see him get one is definitely something special. He’s definitely going to enjoy it.”

Starters, which were voted on by fans, were announced Friday. The remainder of the rosters for the NL and American League teams were announced Sunday after being determined by a combination of voting by players, managers and coaches and selections made by the commissioner’s office.

Musgrove, 29, was informed

before the game by Padres manager Bob Melvin he would be on the All-Star team. The official announcement was made at 2:30 p.m., during the Padres’ 12-0 loss to the Giants.

Musgrove did not shy from acknowledging his disappointment at not making his first All-Star team in 2021. Finishing the first half strong this year was a priority, in part, because he wanted to make sure he was included this time.

“About three or four starts ago, you realize how

close you are and you know you’re only one or two outings away from blowing the thing,” Musgrove said. “So just trying to focus on one at a time and get to this point. After (throwing seven shutout innings) my last outing the other day, I felt like I had a pretty good shot of making it. But last year I thought I’d thrown the ball well and I was in a really close spot. But the league was so competitive last year with pitching in the NL that it could have been anybody.”

As of Sunday morning,

Musgrove ranked third in the NL with a 2.09 ERA and was tied for the lead with 14 quality starts.

“From the very beginning of the season, from opening day to this point, he’s been one of the studs in the National League,” Melvin said. “Very deserved . ... Another feather in his cap and furthers his career into a bigtime pitcher.”

Cano traded

Robinson Cano’s time in the Padres organization lasted just less than two months.

The eight-time All-Star second baseman, who signed with the Padres on May 13, was traded Sunday to the Braves for cash considerations.

Cano was 3-for-33 in 12 games for the Padres before being granted free agency on June 2. He signed a minor league contract on June 10 and hit .333 with an .854 OPS in 21 games for Triple-A El Paso.

Injury updates

Right fielder Wil Myers will begin his rehab assignment this week with Single-A Lake Elsinore. Myers has been out since June 2, and the expectation is he will need a couple weeks to get ready. it is possible he returns right after the All-Star break, but it could be closer to the end of July.

• Left fielder Jurickson Profar had his most active day since suffering a concussion Thursday and is progressing through concussion protocols.

Profar will not travel with the team to Colorado. He could rejoin them for the final series before the All-Star break, which begins Friday at Petco Park against the Diamondbacks.
