United Kingdom has a great deal to offer

-

I would move to the United Kingdom in a heartbeat after recently spending a month there.

As an Anglophile, I’m drawn to its rich history, scenery, cultural treasures and proximity to continental Europe.

Having experienced daily life there, I found additional attributes appealing about its modern progressive society.

A strong democracy. No Jan. 6 drama. The U.K. has withstood the test of time for centuries. Will the U.S.?

A secular society where laws are determined by human rights, not the religious right.

Government recognition of climate change and action to pursue net-zero goals.

Strict gun control and few mass shootings for a relatively civilized, safe society. Even the police don’t carry guns. In the U.S., there are more guns than people — what outcome do we expect?

Free health care for all because it’s a citizen’s right, not a privilege. The profit motive isn’t the primary motivation in U.K. health care. No one suffers personal bankruptcy from getting essential treatment to preserve human life and well-being.

Its diverse, polite people live well. Judging from the packed public places like parks and pubs, Britons have a communal mentality and healthy work-life balance. Who wouldn’t want a minimum four-week paid vacation?

Reverence for its history, whether good, bad or ugly. The U.K. accepts, embraces and learns from its history, instead of erasing, rewriting or renaming it.

Public transportation is practical, convenient and amazing. Hop on a train and traverse town in minutes, or the country in three hours.

Free museums. Some of its best, worldrenowned museums are absolutely free for all visitors.

Of course the U.K. has its own challenges like ours, with crime, homelessness, terrorism, racism, illegal immigration, growing inequality, strikes, political scandals, etc. No society is Utopia.

Alas, the weather. If you were to ask me this question in December when the U.K. is cold, damp and dreary, my answer may well be that I would remain content in sunny San
