California State University San Marcos invites the public to visit the campus on Friday to explore the work of students produced in its Summer Scholars program.

The university invited 73 students to its campus this summer to conduct research as part of the program, hosted by the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The 10-week program concludes with the Summer Scholars Poster Showcase, which will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Friday in the University Student Union Ballroom on campus. The showcase is free to the public, and free parking is available in Parking Structure 1 on Level 6.

Summer Scholars brings together research-driven students to prepare for graduate school and STEM careers by doing hands-on research, exploring networking opportunities and receiving faculty mentorship. At the showcase, the students share the methods, results and interpretation of their work with faculty, staff, sponsors, donors and the public.

The 2022 program also offered enrichment activities outside the lab, including a career panel, workshops focusing on soft skills and scientific communication, and field trips to sites including Thermo Fisher Scientific, San Diego Gas & Electric, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and San Diego State University.

The program especially supports talented students from underrepresented groups in the sciences, as well as veterans, first-generation college students, and those with challenges that create obstacles to academic success. More than 40 percent of Summer Scholars go on to earn advanced degrees.

Sponsors of the program include Hologic, Genentech, Illumina, the National Science Foundation, Lawrence E. & Neva B. Fenstermaker Foundation, Lilly, National Institutes of Health, Viasat, Beckman Foundation, GenMark Diagnostics Inc., San Diego State, Thermo Fisher Scientific, SDG&E and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
