Man dead, 2 hospitalized in apparent drug overdose

-

MISSION BEACH

A man died and two others were hospitalized early Tuesday after they apparently overdosed at a Mission Beach home, authorities said.

Police said someone at the home on Ocean Front Walk near Santa Barbara Place called 911 about 2:35 a.m. and said the men had returned from a party and passed out.

The men, in their 20s, were unconscious but breathing, the caller told police.

The caller then said one of the men had stopped breathing. A dispatcher on the line instructed the caller to start chest compressions.

Officers and paramedics arrived and took over. They administered Narcan — medication that can reverse the effects of opioid overdoses.

One of the men died at the scene, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The two others were taken to a hospital.

No update on their conditions was immediately available Tuesday night.

Two men arrested in shooting death called ‘gang related’

SAN DIEGO COUNTY

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder in the shooting death of a 32-year-old man found gravely wounded on a Spring Valley street in August, sheriff 's officials said Tuesday.

Dejell Broadnax, 23, was arrested at a San Marcos apartment complex late Friday morning, and Jordan Mitchell, 28, was arrested near an El Cajon park mid-afternoon Monday, the county Sheriff 's Department said in a news reDeputy lease.

The two are accused in the death of Spring Valley resident Jorkim Rose.

“At this point in the investigation, it appears the suspects and the victim did not know each other but the circumstances and motivation behind the incident seem to be gang related,” the Sheriff 's Department said.

Broadnax and Mitchell remained jailed Tuesday without bail. Broadnax was arraigned Tuesday afternoon in El Cajon Superior Court, and pleaded not guilty to murder and conspiracy.

Jail records indicate Mitchell is scheduled to be arraigned today.

Each man faces life in prison if convicted.

The names of the attorneys representing them could not be immediately ascertained.

A complaint filed by the District Attorney's Office alleges that the two men armed themselves with semiautomatic handguns and went looking for rival gang members to kill on Aug. 16. Prosecutors allege they drove to Spring Valley, where they spotted the victim, who was wearing a color commonly associated with a rival gang.

The complaint alleges that the two men parked down the road from where the victim was walking, got out of the car, waited for him to approach, then opened fire.

Just before 9:30 p.m. Aug. 16, someone called 911 to report hearing gunfire at the intersection of Thayer Drive and Jamacha Boulevard, in the La Presa area of Spring Valley.

Deputies arrived and found Rose, who had been shot multiple times, the department said. Rose was taken to a hospital, where he died.

District Attorney Chris Lawson said Rose was shot 10 times, and 17 shell casings were found at the scene.

Officials asked anyone with information about the fatal shooting to call sheriff 's homicide detectives at (858) 285-6330 during business hours or after hours at the department's non-emergency line (858) 565-5200.

Woman rescued after she jumps from pier in Oceanside OCEANSIDE

Oceanside lifeguards rescued a woman from the ocean after she went over the end of the city's pier Tuesday morning, a police spokesperson said.

Witnesses called 911 shortly before 11 a.m., reporting that they'd seen a woman jump into the water and not resurface, Oceanside police spokesman Jennifer Atenza said.

Lifeguards responded from the pier and found the woman on the ocean floor, Oceanside Battalion Chief Wes McGee said.

They pulled her to the surface, where a Harbor Police boat brought them on board. She was out of the water about 10 minutes after crews were sent to the scene.

Emergency workers administered life-saving measures as they took her to shore, and then to a local hospital for treatment.

Atenza said the woman was alive, but she did not know her condition.
