D-COORDINATOR NEW NAVY HEAD COACH

- U-T NEWS SERVICES

Navy promoted defensive coordinator Brian Newberry to head coach on Monday, replacing Ken Niumatalolo, the winningest coach in school history who was fired a week ago.

Newberry, 51, has been leading the Midshipmen defense since 2019. His college coaching career dates back 2000, but this will be his first head coaching job.

“It is a great honor and privilege to lead this program,” Newberry said in a statement.

Navy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk said in a statement that Newberry is “respected and was highly endorsed by many.”

Navy moved on from Niumatalolo after going 11-23 over the past three seasons, but the defense didn’t draw much of the blame for that.

Navy lost to Army in overtime on Dec. 10 to finish its season with a 4-8 record.

USC, UCLA news

One of the best pass catchers in the Pac-12 is trading Arizona for USC, handing Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams a tailor-made replacement for his departing top receiver. Dorian Singer led the

Pac-12 in receiving yards last season (1,105) as the lead target in Arizona’s potent passing attack. But after entering the NCAA transfer portal two weeks ago, Singer committed to USC, where he should pick up right where he left off as one of the conference’s top offensive weapons.

Since his arrival at UCLA, Chip Kelly was known for sprinkling fourstar high school prospects into a heavy mix of more lightly regarded players that he could develop. That’s changed in a momentous way. Five-star quarterback recruit Dante Moore flipped his verbal commitment from Oregon to the Bruins, the Detroit King High standout announcing his decision with a Twitter graphic showing him in sunglasses above images of the Hollywood sign and the Rose Bowl.
