Today’s bowl games

-

IDAHO POTATO BOWL San Jose State (7-4) vs. Eastern Michigan (8-4) 12:30 p.m.:

Albertsons Stadium, Boise, Idaho

On the air: ESPN

Line: San Jose State by 31 ⁄2

What’s at stake: After finishing tied for the MAC West Division title but missing out on a spot in the conference title game, Eastern Michigan is trying to complete the second-best season in school history. Eastern Michigan won 10 games in 1987 but has never won more than eight in any other season. The Eagles capped the 1987 season with a victory over San Jose State in the California Bowl, the only previous meeting between the two teams. San Jose State seeks eighth bowl win, its first since 2015, and is in second bowl in three years (Arizona Bowl, 2020).

Key matchup: San Jose State QB Chevan Corderio vs. Eastern Michigan’s secondary. For most of the season, the Spartans’ offense has gone as Corderio has played. He was a second-team All-Mountain West selection after throwing for nearly 3,000 yards, 20 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Corderio struggled against some of the better defenses in the Mountain West in losses to Fresno State and San Diego State. Eastern Michigan’s pass defense was secondbest in the MAC, giving up 208.8 yards per game through the air.

BOCA RATON BOWL Liberty (8-4) vs. Toledo (8-5)

4:30 p.m.: FAU Stadium, Boca Raton, Fla.

On the air: ESPN

Line: Toledo by 41 ⁄2

What’s at stake: The Liberty Flames look to win their fourth straight bowl game and end the 2022 season on a high note after losing their last three games. The Toledo Rockets will go for their 11th bowl win in 19 appearances.

Key matchup: Toledo QB Dequan Finn vs. Liberty defense. Finn led the MAC with 30 total touchdowns — 22 passing, eight rushing. He had 2,127 yards passing and 608 yards rushing, second on the team. Finn (12 interceptions) faces a Liberty defense that generated 23 takeaways (14 interceptions, nine fumble recoveries).
