Toreros update: USD has lost four of five and is coming off a 99-94 loss at Pacific despite shooting 51.5 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from 3-point range. Senior G Jase Townsend scored a season-high 34 points and the Toreros got within three points several times in the second half but could never string together enough stops to get even. Pacific carved up man-to-man and zone defensive looks while shooting 57.6 percent from the field and 48.5 percent from 3. USD opponents are averaging 79.4 points per game, 9th in the WCC and shooting 48.7 percent from the field (10th) and 40.4 percent from 3 (10th). The team has been without graduate senior forward Jaiden Delaire (foot injury) and graduate senior guard Eric Williams Jr. (foot). Delaire (9.2 ppg, 5.3 rpg) remains out while Williams Jr. (14.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 2.3 apg) is questionable. Senior G Marcellus Earlington is fifth in the WCC in scoring (17.5 ppg).

Gaels update: Saint Mary’s leads the WCC and is coming off an 81-64 win at Portland. That game was a bounce-back from a 78-74 loss at Loyola Marymount. The Gaels knocked off No. 12 Gonzaga 78-74 on Feb. 4. As usual, the Gaels play at one of the slowest paces in the nation and also rank in the top 5 nationally in rebound margin (8.6) and scoring defense (56.7). Four players are averaging double figures including star freshman G Aidan Mahaney (15.1 ppg, 2.4 rpg) fifth-year G Logan Johnson (13.7 ppg, 4.8 rpg), senior G Alex Lucas (12.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg) and junior C Mitchell Saxen (12.0 ppg, 8.4 rpg). The team averages a WCC-low 10.8 turnovers per game.
